The holidays are a great time to give gifts and to appreciate the people around us. As you prepare to stuff stockings or do that Secret Santa at work, consider giving the gift of good oral health– get them a toothbrush!

Toothbrushes need to be replaced every 3-4 months–sooner if they appear frayed or worn, or become contaminated in any way. That means you can get a new toothbrush every season of the year–and what better time than the holidays?

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging. This guarantees a quality product that, if used properly, will not damage your tooth enamel or gum tissue. Once you have your new toothbrush, store it properly to make sure it lasts the full 3-4 months. Store it upright, in open air, away from other toothbrushes. If you must store it near other brushes, make sure the heads don’t touch. This can contaminate the brushes.

There are many ways a toothbrush can become contaminated. If it does, it will need to be replaced. This includes times when you have been sick! If you have been feeling under the weather, it’s time for a new brush. Never, ever share toothbrushes–with anyone. Doing so spreads bacteria, food particles, and disease from mouth to mouth. If someone else uses your toothbrush, throw it away immediately and buy a new one as soon as you can.
